In her keynote address, Dr. Annette-Louise Hirmer will explain her understanding of and the benefits of shareholder and entrepreneurial spirit, and outline approaches which, in her view, can foster collaboration between politics and business, and between shareholders, successors and staff members, thereby creating a cross-generational team and ensuring the sensible use of resources.

Presentation: Why business succession plans fail and how you can
prevent this
Family dynamics and the mechanisms by which they operate are factors within the entrepreneurial family, as well as factors relating to the relationship between the entrepreneurial family and the business, which can lead to the failure of succession. If the entrepreneurial family establishes no structures, or only inadequate ones (planning, rules, governance), this can lead to an imbalance in decision-making. If the entrepreneurial family acts and makes decisions based either on an excessively strong family logic or an excessively strong business logic, this can lead to the failure of the succession. The success of the succession therefore depends crucially on the nature of the entrepreneurial family, how its members interact with one another, and how they shape their relationship with the business. Succession can only succeed if succession decisions are made that strike a balance between both family logic and business logic.
