Major subjects Accounting & Auditing and Controlling & Data Analytics
Dear students,
A warm welcome to the information pages for the areas of expertise ‘Accounting & Auditing’ and ‘Controlling & Data Analytics’. These two major subjects are jointly supervised by the five colleagues in the area of expertise: Prof. Dr Ertl, Prof. Dr Langmann, Prof. Dr Rodt, Prof. Dr Schwarzmann and Prof. Dr Trauttmansdorff.

If you wish to build on a solid grounding in accounting to gain a deeper understanding of the tasks and scope of the entire corporate value creation process and its significance for senior management, then you should opt for the major subjects‘Accounting & Auditing’ and ‘Controlling & Data Analytics’, or at least combine one of these major subjects with another suitable one.
The knowledge gained through these major subjects will enable you to make a promising start in a wide range of accounting-related, operational roles within companies across virtually all sectors. The job market for controllers and accounting specialists has so far proved to be extremely resilient, even during periods of economic stagnation or recession. Current trends such as RPA, data analytics and AI are also covered to prepare you as effectively as possible for the new demands of the workplace.
As part of these major subjects, you will acquire the skills and knowledge required to identify, process and analyse the financial data relevant to the management of a company or a business division.
To this end, the ‘Accounting & Auditing’ major covers the following subject areas:
- Accounting and the preparation of annual and consolidated financial statements in accordance with national (HGB) and international standards (IFRS)
- Analysis of Annual Accounts, Corporate Governance and Auditing
and, within the ‘Controlling & Data Analytics’ major, the following subject areas
- Operational Controlling
- Data analytics, RPA and AI in management accounting, as well as
- Reporting, business valuation and modelling
dealt with.
As we jointly offer and supervise these two major subjects within our area of expertise, we have, of course, tailored them perfectly to complement one another and would strongly recommend that students combine both specialisations in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of internal and external accounting and the interplay between the two areas. In this case, we would recommend that you start with ‘Accounting & Auditing’ and continue with Controlling in the following semester. However, the reverse order is also possible in principle. So if you start with Controlling and then find that you enjoy this area so much that you would also like to take Accounting, that’s no problem at all!
We have also made a conscious decision to separate the content relating to accounting and management accounting into two distinct specialisations, in order to enable students to combine one of our major subjects with courses from other areas of expertise.

In addition to the three mandatory sessions in each semester, one or two seminars (modules 5.3 and 6.3 respectively) are jointly offered by the major subjects, covering current topics from the fields of ‘Accounting & Auditing’ and ‘Controlling & Data Analytics’. We highly recommend attending our seminars both as preparation for your Bachelor’s thesis and to further deepen your knowledge.
