Industrial platforms as innovative value-creation systems:
Characteristics, challenges and strategies for SMEs and family businesses (PLATIN-STRAT-KMU)
Dynamics of digitally networked value creation systems
Digital platforms have transformed consumer markets by enhancing consumer benefits and generating innovation gains for businesses. Whilst platform-based value creation is widespread in the consumer sector, it is still in its infancy in the industrial sector. Academic research into this topic spans various disciplines, which is why there is no standard definition of ‘value creation in industrial platforms’. This complicates interdisciplinary discourse and the development of practical concepts.
The call for proposals entitled ‘Dynamics of Digitally Networked Value Systems’ aims to address scientific and analytical questions and to promote discourse within and across disciplines. The aim is to foster fruitful discussions and develop concepts that focus on the dynamics of networked value systems within the relevant disciplines and support their further development in practice.
Challenges and opportunities presented by digital platforms for family businesses
Digital platform ecosystems are viewed from a variety of perspectives, giving rise to a limited range of approaches and theories. Despite advantages such as network effects, family-owned businesses in the German SME sector face challenges such as a shortage of resources.
The PLATIN-STRAT-KMU project is developing a model for the digital Transformation of SMEs to encourage their participation in the platform economy. It analyses platform usage and organisational prerequisites.
Studies into influencing factors and stakeholder surveys are being carried out to examine the changes brought about by digital Transformation and its success. The aim is to advance research and provide practical guidance. The findings will be disseminated through publications and workshops.
